Frequently Asked Questions
A manual chain hoist (also called a chain block) is a mechanical lifting device operated by pulling a hand chain. The hand chain drives a gear mechanism that raises or lowers a load chain with a hook on the end. They're used across virtually every sector of industry for lifting, pulling, and positioning heavy loads without the need for an electrical supply.
Our range starts at 250kg with the Yale Mini360 and goes right up to 50 tonnes with the William Hackett Dual Speed hoist. The most commonly ordered capacities fall between 500kg and 20 tonnes. All hoists come with 3 metres of height of lift as standard, with additional chain lengths available to order.
We stock manual chain hoists from Yale, William Hackett, Tiger Lifting, and Xona. We've been a top UK distributor for Yale since 2008 and have long-standing relationships with all of our manufacturers, so we can supply the full range from each brand at competitive prices.
The Yalelift 360 features a revolutionary 360° rotating hand chain guide that allows the operator to pull the chain from virtually any position — including from the side or from above — which is a major safety advantage in confined spaces. The VSIII is a medium-duty hoist with an improved hand chain guide for smooth, jam-free operation. The 360 is the premium choice for demanding or restricted environments, while the VSIII is an excellent general-purpose workhorse.
Yes. All of our hoists come with 3m height of lift as standard, and you can select additional chain length options on most products when ordering online. For heights of lift above 6 meters, give our sales team a call on 01953 889998 and we'll quote accordingly.
Our manual chain hoists carry a 4:1 safety factor as standard. All hoists are proof tested, typically to 1.5 times the working load limit for capacities up to 10 tonnes, and 1.25 times for 15 tonnes and above.
Yes. Several models in the Yalelift 360 range are available as ATEX-approved variants for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. These meet EN1127-1, EN13463-1, and EN13463-5 standards and are supplied with the relevant ATEX approval documentation. Please note that it is the user's responsibility to identify the required explosion-proof classification for their environment.
It depends on the weight of the load, the height of lift you need, the environment you're working in, and how frequently the hoist will be used. For occasional general-purpose lifting, an economy chain block like the Xona or Tiger Mini Series is a solid choice. For heavy industrial use or confined spaces, the Yalelift 360 range offers more advanced safety features. If you need help selecting the right hoist, call us on 01953 889998. We're happy to talk you through the options.
